On Monday, 15 July this year, the Body of Expert and Licensed Accountants of Romania (CECCAR), the largest professional body in South-Eastern Europe, representing over 47,000 members, expert accountants and licensed accountants, organized the XXth edition of the National Day of the Romanian Accountant, a traditional celebration of accounting life in our country. This year’s event marked the 103rd anniversary of the regulation of the accountancy profession in our country by Royal Decree signed by King Ferdinand I, on 13 July 1921.
The most important event dedicated to the accountancy profession in Romania was celebrated at national level in the 41 counties and Bucharest, under the slogan Tradition for the Future. Growing Together! Expert accountants and licensed accountants across the country, members of the professional body, explored, together with the profession’s institutional partners – regulators and authorities, the business and educational environment–, how artificial intelligence and smart solutions can change accounting, improving the efficiency, precision and added value provided by professional accountants to their partners.
The event which took place in Bucharest, at Novotel Bucharest City Centre, dedicated to this year’s edition of the National Day of the Romanian Accountant, organized at central level together with the Bucharest branch, brought together professional accountants, as well as representatives of the Romanian Government – Chancellery of the Prime Minister, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Labour and Social Solidarity, the Romanian Court of Accounts, the National Anticorruption Directorate, the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police – Economic Crimes Investigation Directorate, the National Trade Register Office, representatives of the business environment, members of parliament, representatives of the higher and secondary education institutions with which CECCAR has cooperation partnerships.
In the opening of the event, the President of the Superior Council of CECCAR, Elena-Ecaterina Chivu, delivered the message of the professional body’s management, reiterating, on this occasion, the importance of accounting professionals for the national economy: “The modernization of reporting and analysis systems is a reality, and this reality sets the medium- and long-term objectives and must ensure a win-win relationship between tax-payer and state. In all these situations, the integration of artificial intelligence should be perceived as a necessity. Smart accounting is the future, where advanced data analytics and machine learning algorithms are becoming essential in providing detailed and accurate financial insights. The new era of smart accounting brings challenges, but also extraordinary opportunities. It is essential to adapt and be prepared for these changes”.
“In a smart economy, with smart businesses, it is obvious that accounting must be smart, too. In this century, digital transformation is the key to success in the age of data, algorithms and artificial intelligence. The accountancy profession understands the present and anticipates the future, by learning from the past without remaining stuck in it. The accountancy profession also understands that, if today we do not implement upskill and technologies, we risk not existing tomorrow. Digital change means changing the paradigm in which businesses are conducted, in which we as professionals operate, changing organizational culture, processes, governance, creating a digital mindset. In this new reality, technology is very important, but it is people who will make a difference”, said Professor Robert-Aurelian Șova Ph.D., Vice President of the Superior Council.
The event included a panel on digital transformation and the impact of artificial intelligence on the accountancy profession. Financial accounting and IT specialists shared insights on the integration of advanced technologies in accounting and how they can reshape organizational processes and strategies.
Discussions addressed how AI can streamline financial-accounting processes, including the relationship with tax authorities, and how it can improve decision-making, consolidating the role of professional accountants as strategic analysts and advisers of entrepreneurs and key players in promoting voluntary tax compliance. The panel was an opportunity to debate the challenges and opportunities brought by the digital age, emphasizing the need of continuous adaptation and innovation in the accountancy profession.
