Modernizing Tax Policies in the EU Single Market

On the 1st of February 2017, Accountancy Europe (ACE) launched in a joint event the publication of the results of a European Policy Centre (EPC) – Accountancy Europe project on modernizing taxation in the Single Market.

Pierre Moscovici, European Commissioner, Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxation and Customs, Dmitri Jegorov, Deputy Secretary General for Tax and Customs Policy Ministry of Finance, Republic of Estonia, Olivier Boutellis-Taft, CEO, Accountancy Europe, Femke Groothuis, President & Wavemaker, Ex’tax project and Fabian Zuleeg, Chief Executive, European Policy Centre (Moderator) took the floor during this event.

In the context of the latest sovereign debt crisis in the Eurozone and the uncovering of controversial tax practices by multinational corporations such as “Lux Leaks” and the “Panama Papers”, the matter of “tax fairness” was at the center of the agenda.

As Pierre Moscovici stated „Increased public pressure has led the European Commission to propose a series of measures in order to tackle tax avoidance/evasion and fraud and to adopt tax-related state aid infringement decisions, for example, in relation to Apple in Ireland, and to prevent further Single Market distortions. Whilst such initiatives are heading in the right direction, a long-term, coherent vision for the future of tax systems in the Single Market is lacking.”
